Newport News, VA (10/11/10) — Witt Mares, PLC, a regional accounting and consulting firm serving clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic, participated in the CPA Day of Service on Friday, September 24, 2010, as part of “Virginia Certified Public Accountants Week,” coordinated by the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA).

The entire firm participated by helping locally-based charities in their respective geographic regions. Witt Mares staff volunteered at the following non-profits:

  • The Fairfax team assisted Our Daily Bread Inc. The Witt Mares team went to the local Safeway and collected donations for Our Daily Bread’s pantry, which produced 50 pounds of food as well as monetary donations.
  • The Newport News team assisted the Center for Child & Family Services. The Witt Mares team provided assistance by painting various rooms in the Center, including a children’s meeting room.
  • The Norfolk team assisted St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children by providing outdoor landscaping assistance, such as weeding flower beds and planting fall flowers. In addition, the team worked with the occupational therapists to prepare materials for use in teaching and training.
  • The Richmond team assisted Maymont. The Witt Mares team provided outdoor landscaping assistance to Maymont, which included tending to the Japanese Zen Garden, pruning bushes and removing weeds and bushes.
  • The Williamsburg team assisted Avalon: A Center for Women and Children. The Witt Mares team renovated some of the facility’s shelters, which included painting multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.

To spotlight the value CPAs offer the Commonwealth’s citizens and commerce, Gov. Bob McDonnell signed a proclamation recognizing September 19–25, 2010, as ”Virginia Certified Public Accountants Week.” The VSCPA introduced a similar proclamation as part of its Centennial anniversary in 2009 and initiated the proclamation again this year to continue highlighting CPAs’ contributions.

In honor of this special week, CPA firms and individual CPAs across Virginia united together on this day for volunteer activities. It was a single day of volunteer service that represents the CPA profession’s ongoing commitment to serving the communities where its professionals live and work, through old-fashioned volunteerism.
